I like working out how websites work, and why they sometimes don't.

I was the website person before it was my job.

Earlier in my career I worked in nonprofit management. Whenever something came up with the website, the task tended to land on me. I enjoyed working it out, and I was usually good at it.

I was interested in the online world and in technical problem-solving long before either became my career.

UX gave me a process.

In 2020 my life changed significantly, and I needed to rethink what work looked like for me. I made a career transition and studied UX design.

It gave me more than design skills. It gave me a way to solve problems. I start with the problem, do the research, and use evidence instead of assumptions. Then I work through the possible solutions, test them, and turn the thinking into something real.

I like using data because it takes some of the guesswork out.

A bigger playground.

From there I worked across different websites and businesses, including full-time work at Alacrity Canada and work with portfolio companies.

Each website brought different problems. That gave me the chance to learn different areas of the web, try different approaches and solve things I might never have met in a narrowly defined role. I found out that I love the variety.

Why I work independently.

After I left full-time employment, I noticed that businesses kept having website work they needed help with. I started taking it on, and clients kept working with me.

Supporting several businesses and solving different kinds of problems suited me well. I realized I did not want to solve problems for only one company, so I built my own business around that. Every project teaches me something that makes me faster on the next one.

How I work.

If I run into something I have not solved before, I research it and keep going until I understand it. I am careful with existing systems, and I document what I do.

I would rather leave you with something you can maintain than something that depends on me.
